Konstruktor Lomo!

Ever think, "boy, I with I could take artsy pictures, but getting a camera is just too easy?" Well, the Lomo guys have released the Konstruktor, an assemble-it-yourself kit that's delivered as parts on a sprue with a tiny screwdriver and a set of instructions.

New Polaroid Camera Available!

After Polaroid discontinued 600 film, lots of dudes like me curled up in a corner and cried for a while. You didn't take pictures with a Polaroid for photographic reasons; you took it for the instantaneous satisfaction of having a hard-copy photo in your hands, no matter if the colors were wrong or things were poorly framed. Don't even get me started on the fun of self porn-photography with Polaroids: the fun is passing around the pictures right then and there, without having to be annoyed with how long the pictures take to pull up on the computer.

Polaroid has come back with new technology in what appears to be an old box. Shaped like several different Polaroid models from the 80s to today, this new camera is wholly digital, but with a new inkless-printing system that gets you an 'instant' 'photo' right out of the camera. Kick ass, Polaroid...kick ass. Too bad it costs an arm and a leg; the awesomeness of Polaroid was that you could pick up a $1 thriftshop camera and $10 worth of 600 at White Drug and have an awesome time. I'm sure price will come down someday; gotta fleece the early-adopters, of course.

Hasselblad Pinhole Camera!

I've been wanting a Hasselblad body for a while, but they're so damn expensive. Thankfully, somebody has made one you can print out and assemble. It's only a pinhole camera, but if you're the artsy kind of dork who'll print out a hasselblad and take pinhole pictures, it's perfect for you.

Smartphones = Camera Death!

The New York Times is predicting that the built-in camera on smartphones will kill point-n-shoot cameras. Or, rather, that the point-n-shoot camera built into a phone will discourage people from buying a standalone point-n-shoot, which only makes sense. Come on, why carry more than one thing? People have stopped wearing wristwatches because of phones, for god's sake, who's going to carry around yet another electronic device only to find the batteries are dead when they try to use it. Now, if people will only start complaining about how shitty cellphone cameras are, they'll start putting GOOD cameras in celphones. I admit, I take a lot of pictures with my cellphone, but I have my nice cameras (including my K1000) when I really want to take a good picture. Pro photographers, for years, have carried around a Polaroid camera for staging and lighting purposes, so it doesn't hurt to have one in my phone. There's a bunch of stuff I would have missed if I didn't take pictures with my cellphone. They've done the small-cheap-camera thing better than the other small-cheap-cameras, so don't fault them for being easy and portable - fault them for tiny sensors and crappy plastic lenses.

Do-It-Yourself Camera!

Do you like to take pictures, but feel like you're missing the visceral experience of the slave labor that built your cheap-ass camera? Superheadz has the camera for you! Looking suspiciously like every free camera given out with a magazine subscription or new checking account, the Plamodel comes on spurs like a Snap-Tite model, so you can put it together and start taking pictures. Only thirty bucks. Superheadz, as a whole, does have some awesome in their catalog, like this 35MM TLR (see also). (via)

LeCoultre Camera!

Once upon a time, cameras were finely-tuned mechanical marvels, and that was just to take a picture. When watchmaker Jaeger LeCoultre makes a camera, however, they added the bells and whistles. Now that's an awesome camera:
